| | A miscarriage is diagnosed as the loss of a pregnancy, usually without any known cause. A miscarriage usually happens before the 20th week of a pregnancy, with the majority happening before the 12th week.
It is estimated about 15% of pregnancies end with a miscarriage. Although it is believed a higher percentage of pregnancies end in miscarriage, because many miscarriages happen very early in the pregnancy and the woman is not aware she is pregnant.

Experiencing a miscarriage can cause a huge emotional upheaval in a woman's life. It's an unfortunate event for any women who is pregnant and/or has worked hard at getting pregnant. There are several early signs of a miscarriage that usually happen before the 12th week of pregnancy which include:
Spotting or bleeding. This is one of the first early signs of a miscarriage. Many women experience spotting or light bleeding during pregnancy that goes full term (usually during the first few months, sometimes the entire pregnancy). You should call your doctor immediately if you begin to experience this anytime during your pregnancy.
Pain or cramps in your abdomen and/or lower back. This is another early sign. Yet again, many women experience pain or slight cramps during their entire pregnancy. You should call your doctor if you begin to experience pain or cramps in your abdomen and/or lower back, especially if they are coupled with spotting or bleeding.
Fluid or tissue passing from your vagina. This sign of miscarriage is usually experienced after you experienced one or both of the above signs, although that may not always be the case. Call your doctor immediately if you experience any fluid or tissue passing from your vagina.
Although many women do experience these symptom(s), they go on and have a full term pregnancy and a healthy baby. It is a good idea to be aware of these symptoms, though, so you can call your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any of these early signs of a miscarriage.
