Giving Birth

It's almost time for giving birth to your new baby. Here are a few hints on getting prepared for giving birth

Your long, seemingly endless pregnancy is coming to an end soon.

Here are a few tips on getting prepared for giving birth.

One way to prepare for birth is by taking a childbirth class or classes. In these classes you will learn what to expect during childbirth, whether you may wish to choose medication, why a c-section may be the best option for you, how to take care of a newborn and a whole lot more. Your doctor should have information regarding childbirth classes in your area.

Another way to prepare for birth is to do a few exercises during your pregnancy that will help you prepare for labor.

One exercise that prepares for labor is the Kegel exercise. This exercise can help tone-up your pelvic floor muscles. To do this exercise, tighten your pelvic muscles as if you are stopping urine. Hold the tightening of the muslces for five seconds, then release. Repeat the tightening and release, four or five times in a row. Try to do the Kegel exercise several times throughout your day.

Another good exercise that stretches the muscles in your pelvis and thighs and limbers you up a bit is by sitting on the floor with your back straight and the soles of your feet touching. It will take some time for your knees and calves to touch the floor, yet try to gently stretch them towards this goal.

Talk to your doctor about delivery options. Decide before you go into labor whether you wish to have pain medication. Also discuss possible difficulties that may be encountered and how they will be remedied. Generally, get any information that will put any fears you may have at ease.

Have plans in place as to who to call when you go into labor. For instance, if you go into labor while your partner is at work, who will take you to the hospital? If you have pets, make sure they will be taken care of for up to two days -- your partner may want to stay with you during this time.

Have a bag packed with pajamas or nightgown(s), items that are comfortable. You may wish to include a comfy baby outfit for your new baby too. Plus, include your favorite soap, toothepaste, makeup, hairbrush, etc.

Be HAPPY -- Your time is near!
